Political parties did not play a major role in the Arab uprisings. The citizens gathered to the streets without a common ideology or organisational background. Since several Northern African countries have now voted in democratic elections, it is the political parties’ time to respond to the citizens’ needs and hopes.
In a recent publication by FRIDE, Kristina Kausch debates the role of political parties in the democratization processes in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. Parties in all these countries face similar problems and struggle to achieve citizens’ trust.
