Large democracies such as Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, India and Turkey have increased their role significantly in international economy and politics. At the same time autocracies, China and Russia in particular, have also become big actors in international issues. The current transformation from the traditional western biased political system to a multipolar one, raises a question about the future of democracy development.
Some experts suggest that a change to a less democratic world is inevitable because China and Russia are gaining more ground. On the other hand the rising democracies have a great potential in supporting democracy in their own neighbourhoods. It is unclear though to what extent will these democracies engage in active democracy and human rights support.
