Venue: Teams webinar
In the summer of 2024, Kenyan youth took to the streets to demonstrate against those in power, demanding transparency and accountability from politicians and the administration. Traditionally, citizens’ protests have been directed at the government, but young people say they have been betrayed by both the government and the opposition. What is new about the protest of Kenyan youth? What strengths does today’s protesting youth in Kenya have over older generations? As actors in democracy, development and other co-operation, what should we consider when planning, implementing and funding projects in Kenya and other African countries where youth rebellion takes similar forms?
The speaker in February’s Democracy Hour is Dr. Oscar M. Otele. The language of the webinar is English. Otele chairs the Department of Political Science at the University of Nairobi. He has 16 years of working experience, spread across lecturing, research, consultancy and community service. He has delivered a number of consultancy assignments on corruption, decentralisation, legislation, election campaign financing, public participation, access to information and climate change.
Democracy Hour is a series of webinars on varying perspectives on the state and future of democracy. After a topical presentation, there will be time for questions and comments.
Please note that the time zone of this event is Eastern European Time (UTC+2).
