What improvements are needed for meaningful civil society engagement in the OSCE? What role should civil society have also in the first (politico-military) and second (economic and environmental) dimensions in addition to the human dimension? Join us to discuss the set of civil society recommendations that have been prepared by Anu Juvonen, Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office on Civil Society and Executive Director for Demo Finland. The recommendations will be launched in December.
Civil society holds a multifaceted role in defending democracy and human rights and strengthening the resilience of societies. Civil society is a source of social innovation, it generates information and data, has a watchdog role in holding decision-makers accountable, and contributes to societal cohesion by reaching out and working with communities and actors that would otherwise not be reached. Right now, safeguarding civic space is crucial as the space for civil society is shrinking, both globally and in OSCE countries.
Enhancing the participation of civil society has been one of the objectives of the Finnish Presidency of the OSCE in 2025. In this Democracy Hour webinar, Anu Juvonen presents the Helsinki recommendations on meaningful engagement with civil society in the OSCE, which is her main deliverable during the Finnish chairpersonship. The webinar is opened by Katja Pehrman, Ambassador for Human Rights in the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
Please note that the time zone of the event is UTC+2.
